Cathey Armillas Has Coached Dozens of TED Speakers. Here's What She's Building Next.
I have spent 25 years in marketing, speaking, and storytelling. Somewhere in there, I became the coach people call when a TED talk actually has to land. My client list reads like a highlight reel: TED, Nickelodeon, Nike, JP Morgan, Tillamook, OHSU. I wrote the book on it. Literally. How to Rock a TED Talk sits on shelves next to speakers who wanted their 12 minutes to matter more than their nerves.
What Does Coaching a TED-Caliber Talk Actually Mean?
Here's what nobody tells you about coaching a TED talk. It has nothing to do with polish. The goal is finding the one idea worth 12 minutes of a stranger's attention, then cutting everything that isn't that idea. Ruthlessly. That's the same drill-based philosophy behind everything we build at SSA, practicing the real skill instead of performing confidence.
I've coached dozens of speakers through that exact process, first-time shakes to a TED spotlight, including Speech of the Grammy-winning hip-hop group Arrested Development and Microsoft's Scott Hanselman. Now that coaching gets a bigger stage of its own. Creative Lab, our twice-yearly in-person retreat, is adding wraparound programming built around real, upcoming TED Talks, starting with a stop at TEDx San Diego on August 27, 2026, at 7:00pm.
3 ways this translates to any speaking moment, TED stage or not
Lead with a story, not a thesis. People remember what happened before they remember what you concluded. Open with the moment. Save the summary for later, if you need it at all.
Cut anything that doesn't serve the one idea. If a sentence isn't moving your one idea forward, it isn't neutral. It's costing you. Cut it.
Rehearse the ending out loud, every time. Most speakers polish the opening and wing the close. The ending is what people actually walk out with. Say it out loud until it feels inevitable, not improvised.
This is the same philosophy I laid out when we launched SSA. Start With Why: The Philosophy Behind Every SSA Program We Run goes deeper into why we build every SSA program, Creative Lab included, around this same idea-first approach.
